Feeling smooth and ready to conquer the world? Wait just a minute before heading out your skin could use some loving care after shaving. You know how it is. Shaving can leave your skin feeling somewhat sensitive or slightly irritated. But no worries, we’ve compiled some easy post-shave skin care strategies to help your skin stay calm, cool, and composed. So relax and let’s make sure you’re feeling as smooth throughout the day!

1. Rinse with Cool Water

After shaving, it’s important to rinse your skin with cool water. This helps to soothe any irritation caused by the shaving process and closes the pores, reducing the risk of irritation and inflammation. Cool water also helps to remove any remaining shaving cream or gel from your skin, leaving it feeling clean and refreshed.

2. Apply Aftershave Balm or Lotion

Once you’ve rinsed your skin, apply an aftershave balm or lotion. These products are specifically formulated to hydrate and soothe the skin after shaving. Look for aftershaves that contain ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or witch hazel, as these can help to calm inflammation and reduce redness. Applying aftershave also helps to restore moisture to the skin, which can be lost during the shaving process.

3. Avoid Alcohol-Based Aftershaves

While alcohol-based aftershaves offer a cooling sensation, they can also be harsh and drying on the skin. This tendency can aggravate the skin, leading to irritation and discomfort, particularly if your skin is sensitive. Instead, choose alcohol-free aftershaves or balms crafted to nourish and soothe your skin while preventing dryness and irritation.

4. Moisturise

Moisturising is an essential step in any skincare routine, but it’s especially important after shaving. Shaving can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it feeling dry and tight. To replenish moisture and keep your skin hydrated, apply a moisturiser after shaving. Look for a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser that won’t clog pores or cause breakouts. Gently massage the moisturiser into your skin, paying extra attention to areas that are prone to dryness or irritation, such as the cheeks and neck.

5. Use an SPF

If you’re shaving in the morning or planning to spend time outdoors, don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Shaving can leave your skin more vulnerable to sun damage, so it’s important to protect it with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming.

6. Avoid Fragranced Products

Fragranced skincare products can be irritating, especially on freshly shaved skin. To minimise the risk of irritation and inflammation, opt for fragrance-free or hypoallergenic products. These are less likely to contain ingredients that can cause sensitivity or allergic reactions, making them safer and more gentle on the skin.

7. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation is an important step in any skincare routine, but it’s especially beneficial after shaving. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and debris from the surface of the skin, preventing them from clogging pores and causing ingrown hairs. After you shave, use a gentle exfoliating scrub or a washcloth to exfoliate your skin, but be careful not to overdo it, as this can cause irritation and inflammation. Aim to exfoliate two to three times a week, depending on your skin type and sensitivity.

8. Keep Your Razors Clean

It’s important to keep your razors clean and in good condition to prevent bacteria buildup and reduce the risk of infection. Rinse your razor thoroughly after each use to remove any hair, shaving cream, or gel residue. Store your razor in a clean, dry place to prevent bacteria from thriving. Replace your razor blades regularly to ensure a clean, smooth shave and minimise the risk of irritation and infection.
