How To Manage Sensitive Skin

sensitive skin

Sensitive skin can be as unpredictable as the weather. It’s like that friend who’s always on edge, you’re constantly walking on eggshells, unsure of what might cause the next flare-up. But with a little knowledge and a lot of self-love, you can keep your sensitive skin looking as radiant as a summer’s day. The key to caring for sensitive skin is knowing what irritates it and how to avoid these irritants effectively.

1. Identify The Cause

The first step to managing sensitive skin is figuring out what sets it off. This could be anything from certain ingredients in your skincare products to changes in the weather. Keep a skin diary, jotting down any changes in your skin and what you think might have caused them. This will help you identify patterns and potential triggers.

2. Keep It Simple

When it comes to sensitive skin, less is definitely more. Bombarding your skin with too many products can overwhelm it and lead to irritation. Stick to a simple routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturising, and steer clear of products with harsh ingredients like alcohol, fragrances, and dyes. Look for products labeled as ‘hypoallergenic’, ‘for sensitive skin’, or ‘fragrance-free’.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate!

Hydration is key for all skin types, but especially for sensitive skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and use a hydrating moisturizer morning and night. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which can help lock in moisture.

4. Always Patch Test New Products

Before you dive headfirst into that new cream, do a patch test first. Apply a small amount to a discreet area, like the inside of your wrist, and wait 24 hours. If you don’t have any adverse reactions, it’s likely safe to use on your face. This can help you avoid a full-blown skin reaction to a product your skin doesn’t agree with.

5. Protect Your Skin

Sensitive skin needs extra protection from environmental factors like sun, wind, and cold. Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. In colder months, protect your skin with a good moisturiser and a scarf to shield your face from the wind.

6. Nourish Your Skin From Within

What you put in your body can have a big impact on your skin. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and walnuts, can help reduce inflammation and keep your skin healthy. Avoid foods that can trigger inflammation, like sugar and processed foods.
