Does your face feel slick throughout the day? Do you constantly battle shine and worry about clogged pores and breakouts? If so, you’re not alone. Oily skin can be a real source of frustration, impacting not just your appearance but also your confidence. But don’t worry, it can be effectively managed with the right skincare routine and lifestyle habits. In this guide, we’ll explore key steps to take control of your oily skin. Without further ado, let’s jump right in.

1. Cleanse Gently

Oily skin has a natural oil layer called the sebum, which helps protect it from dehydration and irritation. Harsh cleansers can strip away this sebum, disrupting the skin barrier and leaving it vulnerable. This can lead to dryness, redness, and even increased oil production as the skin tries to overcompensate for the lost moisture. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle, oil-free cleanser.

2. Moisturise

Don’t skip moisturiser! While it might seem counterintuitive, oily skin still needs hydration. Oily skin produces excess sebum, an oil that helps keep the skin barrier protected and hydrated. However, sebum and hydration are two different things. When your skin lacks hydration, it can send signals to increase sebum production to compensate. This can lead to a cycle of overproduction and even more oiliness. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser that absorb quickly without leaving a greasy residue. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are popular choices as they draw moisture into the skin without feeling heavy.

3. Exfoliate

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and excess oil that can clog pores, prevent breakouts, and improve skin texture and brightness. For oily skin, chemical exfoliators with salicylic acid are often the best choice because it’s oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into pores. However, even with oily skin, be gentle when exfoliating. Aim to exfoliate 1-2 times a week.

4. Adjust Your Lifestyle

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and managing stress. These factors can all contribute to oily skin. To help regulate oil production, reduce your intake of greasy and sugary foods, and focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps maintain your skin’s hydration.
